About Buckingham Fountain

Buckingham Fountain, a Chicago landmark in the center of Grant Park, is one of the largest fountains in the world and features a center jet that streams water up to 150 feet in the air!

The fountain, a gift from philanthropist Kate Sturges Buckingham, was built in 1927 and designed by Chicago architect Edward Bennet. Bennet, along with French Sculptor Marcel Loyau and engineer Jazques Lambert, modeled the fountain after Latona Basin at Versailles.

Buckingham Fountain Fun Facts:

  • The fountain represents Lake Michigan, with four pairs of Art Deco style sea horses that symbolize the four states that border the lake’s shoreline
  • During its most impressive water displays, the fountain circuits through more than 15,000 gallons of water per minute
  • The fountain contains more than 1,500,000 gallons of water and nearly 200 jets

About the James M. Nederlander Theatre

The James M. Nederlander Theatre, formerly the Oriental Theatre, opened on May 8, 1926. It was one of the first motion picture palaces whose décor was inspired by the Far East. At the time, the theatre presented popular first-run motion pictures as well as elaborate stage shows.

The beautiful 2,250 seat venue was added to the Federal National Registry of Historic Places in 1978. However, the building continued to crumble and was closed to the public in 1981. In 1996, Chicago Mayor Richard M. Daley announced the theatre would be restored to its original grandeur for live stage musicals.

Since it’s re-opening, the James M. Nederlander Theatre has showcased a list of enormous hits, including Blast, Wicked, Billy Elliot, Big Fish, Newsies, and more!
